Allendale, MI - In the only home dual action of the season, GVSU hosted the Rockets of the University of Toledo for two bouts. On the strength of two returning All-Americans and three other wrestlers with National Tournament experience, UT entered the second semester as the top-ranked team in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association's Division 2 according to TheOpenMat.com and third in the NCWA point scoring system.
GVSU entered the meet ranked fifth in Division 1 according to OpenMat and first in all divisions in the NCWA point scoring system. It was the first action of the new year for each program, and a great test for the upcoming NCWA National Duals as number one in D1 met number one in D2.
De'Ante Evans, an All-American for Defiance College last year, put Toledo on the board with a win by fall at 141, moving the score to 12-6.
At 165, Kyle Benkarski went right after the number one ranked wrestler in the country, returning All-American Taylor Workman. He nearly secured a fall before dropping a tough bout but excited the crowd and GVSU bench with his effort. After a decision by Toledo at 174, they closed the team score to 18-13.
Former teammates at Yale High School, Bailey Bischer (184) and Derek Desloover (197) won back-to-back bouts by technical fall, by scores of 16-0 and 16-1, respectively.
Ben Wright made his season debut with an impressive fall at 235 and Harun Bodganic put an exclamation point on the bout with a fall over a previously undefeated opponent. Final score, Lakers 46 and Rockets 13.
In the first extra bout of the day, Langston Mitchell earned his first win of the year, with a first period fall. He's shown great growth in recent practices.
In the second round, GVSU would send a second line-up to face the Rockets.
Khalil Brown started the Lakers off with a forfeit victory at 133. Ahmad(AK) Khatib completed a huge comeback with two sets of nearfall in the third period to prevail 12- 7 at 184. Nick Verran looked strong in a 9 - 1 major decision at 235. With several forfeits for the "B-team" dual, these three victories were not enough, with the Rockets taking the second dual 35-13.
These Great Lakes Conference foes will see each other in each of the five remaining events this season, including the Laker Classic at GVSU on February 4 and the Glass City Duals at UT on February 11.
